Day Six: Tour of Westin St. John

Today we did some dreaming. We love it here at St. Thomas and adore St. John. As I mentioned yesterday while we were getting information on tours of St. John, we were asked if we might be interested in a 90 minute presentation by the Westin on a better way to vacation. We are always looking for better ways to vacation, so the easy answer was yes. When she told us the Westin would give us some money to use in the local shops, well, we were sold. We made our arrangements yesterday and today we dreamed a little.

Of course we had to get out of bed first, and we have been settling into the whole "vacation" concept. During our first week here waking up at 6 am wasn't unusual, but today we graduated to 8 am. That is late for us. After getting ready and having a little breakfast we made our way to the main office to get a taxi to Redhook so we could again catch the ferry to St. John. I was shooting for the 10:00 am ferry. Turned out to be easy and we arrived at the dock with plenty of time to spare, even met a couple from New Jersey; they were going to St. John as well. They had arrived only the day before, so Tracy went over the basics of touring St. Thomas; what to do, where to shop, how to get there and so on. I was getting more photos.

As we rode the ferry Tracy and I talked about our upcoming tour of the Villas at Westin St. John and Tracy asked me why we had caught the 10:00 am ferry, when our tour wasn't until 11:30. For some reason i was thinking we had a 10:30 appointment. It turned out that it would have been better had we had a 10:30 appointement as they were short staffed as the person slated to do our tour was out sick. Figures. They asked if we could wait or come back another day. Neither option was attractive. They finally offered us a little more money if we would come back in 25 minutes. It has already started to rain, so we just went next door to the on-site jewelry store. Not one I would shop in, they had items costing more than my car. Tracy enjoyed looking around though, especially at the crystal.

We returned just in time for us to meet with the Kurt and get the skinny on partial ownership of a condo in St. John. I won't bore you with the details, but suffice it to say even though the price was reasonable (all-be-it) for a week; we did in the end decline. We did see some of the units and they were gorgeous and not as small as i thought they they might be. The views were also incredible. If it is something you are interested in, Starwood (owners of Westin) have a pretty good system that allows you to trade your week around with very little hassel; at least if you take property in St. John. No more housing units of any kind can be built there and apparently the Westin units have increased in value by 400% since 2000. I though, digress. We got our free lunch and our bucks and headed to the jewlery store Tracy had already scouted that morning and picked up a very nice Citzen watch for her.

Due to the delay, and our sales program was a bit longer than 90 minutes, we finally headed out of St. John on the 4:00 ferry. We had spent longer there than we had anticipated, but the trip turned out to be worth it. Lady's just love jewelry and I had fun doing a little dreaming of owning a piece of a tropical island, even just one week of it.

We wanted to eat out, but on a Sunday that is a tricky thing to do in St. Thomas. The locals like their Sunday's off. We did find a pub in Redhook over looking the marina that was open. We had planned on eating there, but it turned out to be a little too colorful for us and we decided to take our food to go.

Finally back home, we decided to chill and watch one of the movies I had brought with me. Over The Hedge was just what the Dr. ordered. All-in-all it was another great day in paradise, even if it was a bit unusual. We don't know if this is the place we want to migrate to each year, but we are starting a list and St. Thomas/St. John will easily stay near the top.
